Position Overview:
The Accounting Manager will be responsible for managing and overseeing the day-to-day accounting functions for a wide range of clients. This includes individuals, startups, and small businesses, requiring strong expertise in accounting, financial management, leadership, and tax compliance. The role involves handling a variety of responsibilities, including financial reporting, tax filings, mortgage investment corporation accounting, and more.

  6. Internal Controls and Compliance:
    • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards (ASPE or IFRS).
    • Generate financial reports for stakeholders such as investors, board members, and regulatory bodies.
    • Prepare compliance engagement reports, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
    • Meet internal and external reporting deadlines consistently.
    • Oversee the preparation and filing of all tax returns, including T2 Corporate Income Tax Returns, T1 Personal Tax Returns, T4/T4A slips, T5 slips, and GST/HST filings.
    • Ensure compliance with both federal and provincial tax regulations.
    • Collaborate with external tax advisors to optimize tax strategies and resolve complex issues.
    • Stay updated on changes to tax laws in British Columbia and across Canada.
    • Manage the financial operations of the MIC, ensuring compliance with CRA regulations.
    • Oversee accounting for mortgage portfolios, including interest income, loan disbursements, and repayments.
    • Prepare and file MIC annual tax returns in line with the 95% net income distribution requirement.
    • Work with external auditors to ensure compliance and provide the necessary documentation.
    • Provide comprehensive accounting services to startups, including bookkeeping, financial reporting, and tax compliance.
    • Assist in setting up accounting systems, such as QuickBooks, and other financial management tools.
    • Help startups prepare financial projections, investor decks, and materials for funding.
    • Advise on tax planning strategies, including SR&ED tax credits.
    • Manage payroll, accounts payable, and receivables for startup clients.
    • Supervise, mentor, and train accounting staff to foster a high-performance environment.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and offer constructive feedback.
    • Support staff members’ professional development and training needs.
    • Develop and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure data accuracy.
    • Conduct audits of financial processes to identify potential risks.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit process.

Qualifications:

  • CPA designation (or equivalent) required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE/IFRS) and tax regulations.
  • Experience in managing accounting for startups, individuals, and small businesses.
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, TaxCycle, and other accounting software.
  • Proven ability to mentor and lead a team, fostering professional development.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact with both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Chinese.
